Default porting work

I am installing a Edelbrock cam kit (mild)and Performer intakein my 1986 F-150 with a 351 W 4bbl HO engine from the factory. When I looked at the exhaust ports, I couldn't believe how big the Thermactor bump was inside. Being I was going to do a valve job on it, I decided to do a little port work on the exhaust port and grind out the emissions bump for some extra flow. Well I have done one port and got the bump down to a good roof flow, but there is still a valley or groove in the roof from the casting of the hole from the emissions. I have heard you can get a piece of round stock and stick through the end of the head to close off the air ports.I can do this but to make the roof smooth I have to grindmore metal from the roofto eliminate the groove. Has anyone done this without gettinginto water, or is it ok to leave this little valleyleading to the air hole like it is and just plug the hole up with a long piece of iron stock? These heads are stock E5AE-CA and probably the 68 or 69cc chambers. The valves are 1.78 and 1.45. I really can't put bigger valves in it without getting in to the spark plug boss so I'll do a three angle valve job. Let me know what you think- Bud
