Default 351 vs. 331

here is the deal my buddy just got a 331 short block, he will have h/c/i. how will my 351 with a cam and intake run with it? he has an 85 gt, and we will both have 3.73's.

His should be quite a bit stronger. To keep up you'll need heads.

<-- 351, flat tappet 292 cam, dished pistons, windsor jrs, 373s, auto, 3500 stall, drag radials 11.70s ( went 11.90s with ported stock heads )

A 351 short block with the same time, money and supporting mods as the 331 will crush the infearior cid engine. No replacement for displacement!


If you are that worried about being out run, ****** the top end of that 351 and pull the hydrualic cam out, replace with a solid lift flat tappet, change the springs and stuff on the heads. Set the valves cold about .018" or so depending on who ground the cam, throw your heads on there with some very mild port work and you'd be laughing at him for months to come. I know a guy that went from a hydraulic flat tappet to a solid flat tappet cam and picked up just over a second off his E.T. and almost 6 mph in the quarter.
