Default 351w is 2 weeks away from going in a 88 gt, but i need some information.

first this may seem like a crazy question, but is a flywheel the same as a flex plate? please help. ok what i really need to know is if a 351w flywheel will work on a 10.5 inch clutch. also what flywheel is the best that won't break my wallet. i have a cobra clutch in the car now, but was told that it probably won't be able to hold the torque of the 351. was told zoom clutches are pretty good. please help me on what i should get and what i really need. thanks for the help. jamie

flex plates are for automatics, fly wheels are for manual alot of people I think are confused with that one.

you'll need a 28oz flywheel, easy on your wallet would be to take your 5.0 fly wheel and have it machined and balanced to 28oz or just get one from a stock 351w one from your local auto parts store

hey man thanks for the help. now one more question. will that 28oz flywheel fit a 10.5 inch clutch. its not the stock clutch in the car. it a ford racing cobra clutch. will a new clutch be neccessary for this flywheel? also how many teeth does the flywheel need? will a stock flywheel work just fine? thanks everyone for they help. i really need it over here in charleston,sc. thanks jamie

you can buy a flywheel that is for a 10.5" clutch. if it is a stock mustang flywheel from a 302 it will need to be rebalanced to 28oz to go on a 351w. your stock flywheel from your 302 has 157 teeth. it will work just fine. i just bought a billet steel ford racing piece for my setup.

STOP!!!!!!!!!!! what if the combo is not balanced to 28oz???? Mine is 0 balanced....Ask the machine shop first before you go getting parts. Also, I run a King Cobra on mine, and it holds just fine. If you are gonna be over 550rwhp, then I would look into a spec stage 3 if you are gonna be driving it on the skreets...... they are easy on the calves, and hold real well.

yea mr.mustang is right, it was wrong for me to assume his engine is balanced to 28oz. You can have them balanced to 28, 50, and 0 oz.

And gorilla you'll be fine with the KC clutch

so your saying if i wanted to buy a new fly wheel then i can purchase one that is for a 5.0 but it just needs to have 157 teeth and be balanced. what if i don't know the balance of the engine? its has a new but stock crank. will that point me in the right direction? and the motor will probably have around 400 hp. there are a few ppl that are telling me that i need to get a high perfomance Zoom clutch. instead of using the king cobra clutch. the cobra clutch has about 7,000 miles on it. appreciate all the information everyone is giving me. thanks

you can buy a fly wheel for a 5.8 they're the same thing but stock ones are a different balance
the fly wheel you buy depends on the other components you already have, 1st figure out your engines balance, tell us alittle more about the engine and maybe we can help.

and about the clutch, you do not have to do anything anyone tells you to, if you dont want to buy a new clutch dont buy one. I would only replace it if it starts to slip and it doesnt meet your standards anymore.

ok the motor is a 1991 351w 5.8l out of a cop car. it has been to the machine shop and been bored .30 over, everything in the motor is new, pistons, crank, oh with the exception of the connecting rods. they are the old ones, and is in great condition, so i was told. everything is new cam, intake, headers, 670 cfm street avenger carb, holley black fuel pump. i'm not the one thats actually building the motor i have a mechanic who is doing it, but its more like side work, you know what i mean. so he doesn't spend all his time on it, so he is letting me find the parts and the best deals on stuff. The flywheel is hopefully the last thing i need buy, but i doubt it. oh i forgot to mention a new 4 core radiator. so basically if i can't figure it out, then i have to leave it up to him and that might cost me more and take more time and i am trying to get this motor done and from this guy, before another year goes by. so everyone please help me, so i can get this thing done and in the car. if i new how to put pictures on here i would. i do know that u can check me and the car out at utube under dorchester dragway. its s black 88 gt with 17" chrome cobra wheels. if u see the video on utube don't laugh cause it was my first time ever going to the race track. thanks
