yeah, but jumping into 34-36 first thing is just retarded...
i know for a fact my TW's will take 36* total because of the efficient chamber design, but wont make any MORE power past prolly 30-32*, so the extra 4-6 degrees is just trouvle i can get myself into if i get bad fuel or something else like that...
FWIW, im starting my motor at 26* and working my way up from there to wherever it stops making more power, or the curve looks the way i like...

Your car is carbed????? sn95 331?? efi timing works a little different than carb!
it wont nessesarily be at 34-36 at startup, what kind of distributor are you using? mech advance, vaccum or electrical?
My buddy with a 390 has his at 18 i think and the mech dist goes up to 36 i think he said! he converted to the petronix internals on his stock distributor!

no my car is EFI.
timing still works the same way however, i just have the ability to have it move over a much broader range than a traditional mech/vac dist...
HOWEVER...
just because i can add a lot more timing to increase driveability at lower rpm/load situations than a carb, does NOT mean that the total amount of timing the engine will tolerate at WOT will change, i can just add a degree or two more from 5000-7000rpm vs having it be all out at 4500-5000 like a carb...
with that being said, i HATE timing and fuel trim tables, i wish i would go carb with my 331 (was planning on it with the 408 because i wouldve needed MASSIVE injectors) i want the "mildness" of a nice stock (sort of) EFI system for long trip and starting...

What aftermarket engine managment system are you using , you arent changing the eec-iv timing alone you dont have the option with just the ecm! , and efi timing and carb timing are nothing alike aside from the coil and distributor making spark, you have numerous sensor inputs to the ecu to advance and retard timing in the efi world where as carb you have a vaccum source and or mechnical source nothing else! so theres your 2 different worlds!

FAST EZ EFI
like the look, plus i could just buy the base system, since i didnt have to convert anything carb fuel stuff the EFI lines.
i was running MASS FLO on my 357W, but it was too expensive, and was a PITA...
it was going to go into my FFR '33 (my Mustang was a test mule), but i got the EZ EFI for it as well, much easier, 1/2 the price, and installs much cleaner...
im just gonna do another 331 for the '33 anyways, i dont want the extra 100lbs over the front. 2100lbs seems like a fine weight to be at, not 2200 lol...
as for the timing, that was for my friends 98GT, our computers dont let you adjust it (IIRC), the tables and scalars arent there to allow it.
as for my car, my timing involvement consisted of going to 13* base timing.
end of story lol...

pricey, but SUPER easy, and it looks BITCHIN, just add an air cleaner of your choice
