Hey,
anyone know if there is any way to get hold of a the factory tune that was originally in the ECM?
A friend of mine contacted me and told me thateven though he has a working Diablo canned tune running, he accidently overwrote or deleted his original backup tune by downloading the latest updates from Diablo for his Predator tuner.
Now his original backup is gone!
Is there an easy way to get another one to replace the original factory tune without contacting Ford?
I don't know what he can do so I am putting it out here hoping someone else had this problem before and knows the solution.
I think that if he contacts Ford, even if they can help him they may very well void his warranty. That would suck!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I can't believe that it would actually let him overwrite the factory tune stored in the tuner. That is stupid on Diablos part since he now can't restore the factory tune.

You might try contacting Diablo for help. They may have a solution.

 

cant he plug it into yours and then store that as the factory tune and then use that?

 

No this will vin lock the device to his car.

Supposedly people have been getting some ecu software upgrade at the dealership. he can try an dget that then use his diablo to restore the tune. Other wise i see no way he can get it back. pretty crazy that it wrote over the backup must take some doing to do that o_O

 

Best bet would be to contact diablo.

 

Problem solved.
Went by my friends place this morning as I suspected he was just panicing for nothing.
Turns out I was right.
Evidently a firmware update won't overright the backup! Whew! That was close!
Diablo does say to dump the original backup back into the ECU before you do a firmware update. Obviously just a precaution.
I made sure he backed it up on to CDRom too. Now he's covered no matter what,,just in case.
I mean if the Diablo fries then one is really screwed unless they have a backup of the backup ;-).

I was curious also.. What would happen if someone stole your diablo while your car was tuned? How would you get a factory tune back??

 

Either have the dealer reflash the ecu or buy a new one. Either way I think you'd be screwed.

 

Way old thread. Problem was solved a while ago.
Actually if it happens to you, you can actually get a factory tune with your VIN number from the tuners like Diablo etc.
A lot easier than I thought it would be but my friend didn't lose his original tune like he thought he did.
Even though the tuners say you should restore your ecu to a factory tune before performing firmware upgrades to your tuner, they usually don't lose the original backup. It's just a precaution thank goodness.

 

I had an issue with my pcm last week, wanted the dealer to check for any updates from ford. I used my sct-2 tuner to resore to oem, checked the strategy code and wrote it down. Took car to dealership, had them check for updates and then went home. At home in the driveway, I connected my tuner, checked the oem strategy code, it had changed, so I then uploaded the custom 89 octang tune. Car would not start, so I returned to oem tune, car would not start, I did this twice, then checked the oem strategy code, it was back to the original code ! WTF.

I called ford roadside service, had car towed to dealership, left it there with a note to call me when they figured out what happened. The tech called an asked me what I had done, I told him about using a sct-2 tuner, he told me the error code was referenced to corupted files in the PCM. He erased and reprogramed the PCM with my "as built data" and then checked for updates. This did not void my warrenty, but did cost me about $200. I called my tuner guy, he told me to send the sct to him and he would check it out, reload the tunes, and send it back. I was told this can happen when the cars pcm and the tuner are not in sync. That when you first use the tuner, it locks to the cars vin, and saves the oem tune. Appently the tuning process with the sct tuner corrupted some files and then restored the oem tune it save the first time I used it. This caused the checksum on the oem updated tune to be incorrect. So when I restored it and tried to start the car, the PCM failed on post. This can happen anytime you restore to oem and then the dealer uploads new data to you PCM.

Next time, I'm reinstalling the custom tune at the dealership, then if it gets corrupted, they can reflash my pcm right there, and avoid the tow back.

I did not follow SCT's instuctions to turn off all electrical stuff, I had the a/c blower on, the fuel pump breaker in, ect. And while it was updating the files, I then turned of the a/c blower, turned off the radio, and shut the door. I suspect that tuning off the electrical stuff prior to tuning is not so much for keeping battery voltage up, but may have to do with not causing any "electrical noise" in the dc power system while tuning, as this could cause a corupted file to be uploaded. Just my hunch. The reason for the fuel pump fuse/relay is that ford's electrical fuel pumps are known to generate rf hash and have caused problems with mobile two way radio operations.

I sent the SCT-2 tuner back to be checked out before I try this again.
