I personally wouldn't want that kind of major work done to my car unless it was for a really great gain, which I don't think cams give you.

How come your wanting to get cams?

Contact Mike @ www.powerhouse411.com.PH does not list cams/heads as being offered on their website, so you need to call and ask. The benefits of going with aftermarket cams would be lost if you do not match them to the heads (i.e. porting & polishing, and perhaps larger valves) and other drivetrain components. The 3.8L guys have seen good results with cams and P&P'ing their heads, but not many folks have pioneered the way for the 4.0L - at least not with documented results. As time progresses, we will see more definitive answers about the benefits of heads/cams on the 4.0L

These 4.0's can pack a punch when they're modded. Super Six Motorsports dyno'd a 4.0 v6 with Stage 3 Heads, performance cam, and a procharger at 14 PSI and put out 440 RWHP and 388 FT/LB of Torque

Basically: Heads 'n cam packages are near-worthless on a naturally-aspirated4.0. Also, due to the difficulty in replacing heads on these cars, after shipping, install and tuning, you're getting very close to supercharger price, for 1/10th to 1/5th (optimistically)the gain.

I think the gains MAY be worth it, even if the car is naturally aspirated (N/A). ranebowcyxx is close to dialing in the tune on his combination (basically, he had cams & heads on his supercharged 4.0L, and decided to ditch the blower for N/A power). Once he gets it tuned properly, we will start to have a better idea for the potential of heads & cams on a N/A 4.0L. I just think it's too soon to know for sure.

Anotherthing to consider that is almost NEVER mentioned regarding cams & heads is the effect the cams will have on the engine. Really, it's two areas of possible concern: 1) the power band will most likely shift up higher in the RPM range; 2) the engine idle quality may suffer alot. For racing set ups, lopey cams sounds bad-*** and they should help performance, but for a daily driver (like 99% of us) cams could compromise a car's road manners and overall response on the street. Just something to consider...

Well said.

And I have said this on other boards, but it bears repeating myself. Not to long ago when FI was way over the top, the most common method of getting more power out of a motor was to cam it, and if you were serious you got some head work done.
How do you all think they made 400 HP in "the old days"?
