If you have to ask either of those questions, don't even try it. How did it go bad? (please tell me you weren't downshifting to brake)

How many miles are on the car? That is important. Your next step is to call Ford customer service, not your dealership and get them to cover the cost. Unless you have a lot of miles on the car your transmission should not be going out.

Do not settle for no, and you will get it fixed.

52k miles. I could try calling their customer service but they're just going to tell me the car only had a 3 year/ 36k mile warranty. Plus a syncronizer is a component that could wear out due to abuse and they'll just claim that, even though I didn't abuse the car at all.

Btw, downshiftingdoes not destroy your transmission. That's a bunch of poppycock.

Downshifting doesn't wear out the trans, you are right. But shifting to a gear that is too low for the speed you are moving, and letting the downshift slow you down rapidly, will wear out your synchronizer fairly rapidly. (such as shifting into 2nd at 80mph, for example). I am not saying you do, but that is one way that downshifting will wear out a synchronizer.

Yeah. Downshifting to 2nd at 80 mph and downshifting to 1st at over 20 mph will wear out your tranny but it'll destroy your clutch before that happens.

But downshifting to slow down will not hurt your tranny at all. such as downshifting to 2nd at 40 mph.. unless you are driving on a ****ty tranny from the 1970s.

There are firms online that sell rebuilt T-5s for a lot less than that. Maybe you can find one that will use yours as a core return. Much easier to just remove & replace than to rebuild yourself.

It doesn't hurt to try, and often times you can have an After warranty adjustment (AWA) done where they pay most of the cost. The dealer can do an AWA up to 75,000 miles. Be relentless. If this is your first Ford say this is your first experience and now you are going elsewhere, if this is your umpteenth Ford tell them you are a loyal customer they are about to lose.

I feel for you man, and I do not blame you for the problem, 2nd gear on the T-5 goes out with alarming regularity.

try this site they often have takeoff trannies or rebuilds that you can bolt right in http://mpsautosalvage.com/products/index.cfm
