Default Rear Gears

hey guys. anyone run 4:10s? If so, how did it affect drivablity? I want 4:10s but if my car is a daily driver and if it was going to affect its streetability drastically then im guna get 3:73s. Any details are appreaciated. Gas millage, ride quality, anything you can think of.

Try driving with the OD off all day - including some highway driving - and see what you think. It will approximate the 4.10's, not exact, but will give you an idea.

No problems as my daily driver however I am not in a lot of rush hour traffic. When I do get caught in heavy stop and go traffic, it gets annoying because my auto is constantly wanting to upshift and downshift. In that case I just throw it into gear and drive it manually.

MPG loss was minimal but that is somewhat subjective. I don't know how much you have to travel, on highways, etc.

If you have an auto, then you will require a tune to reprogram your shift points. Make sure you find a good installer.

Hopefully my car will be ready tomorrow and I can give you an idea of the difference. I've got a Diablo tuner that I can change the gear size in, so hopefully my auto doesn't try to up and down shift constantly as others have described

With your Diablo tuner you can only adjust the speedometer. In order to change the shift points, you need to find someone that still writes tunes for the Diablo. You might try AM/Bama since they used to write for the Diablo before they hooked up with AM.

the price, lack of knowledge i suppose.
i can change the shift points with the tuner too, so i wouldnt think i'd need a custom tune, just the right parameters to plug in. then again, as i already stated, i have little to no knowledge of the intricacies of a tuner/tune

If you don't know anything about tunes and tuners, I would not go around and mess with settings. You can botch things up rather quickly, not to mention the hand held is limited. Get someone reputable to write you a tune.

OK so I got the car back.. not a huge difference, but a good one. Quicker acceleration especially when already trucking. Obviously higher idle rpms on the highway which I could see destroying gas, but if MPG is your concern buy a hybrid.. smooth, firm shifting after I reset the axle ratio.. Smoother, quicker ride, so im happy. I do have the dreaded 'whine' though. Its not a whine persay, it actually sounds like a whirl, and only does it at certain speeds and not while accelerating, so I really think its just the difference in rpms I'm hearing, although after reading all the scare tactics on here I'd be lying if I said I wasn't worried. If it gets worse ill report back n take it back to be looked at .. I had it done at aamco, and from what I saw, read, and heard about them, they're very competent, but no ones perfect. With how smooth its running, I can't imagine this whirl is abnormal

Oh, and the tlok added amazing grip. My all seasons aren't super grippy, but one wheel burns happened so often, but a few chirps was all I got during one real effort to break loose. In an auto granted,.but I'm happy

Something to keep in mind is that if you plan to go FI later down the road, the taller gears make it harder to get the tires to stick to the ground. I put 373s in mine, now that I'm FI, I find it difficult to accelerate hard without just sitting there spinning the tires.

With some additional upgrades and stickier tires I should be able to overcome that though.

Again, just an fyi
