Default Oil filters?

So its that time again, time to change the oil... the only thing is, i bought a motor craft fl820S oil filter for my 2010 4.0, but it seems to have a smaller one installed on it (looks like the fl500s). Im confused as to why every chart I've seen has said to use a 820, but the ford dealership i got my mustang from has a 500 on it. Can anyone enlighten me?

I just looked on the RockAuto catalog which is usually pretty good. It calls for the FL820S filter for the 2010 Mustang, 4.0 L.

It would be the 820S being the 4.0, hell I think the 4.6 uses it too.

the FL-500 and FL-820S are physically interchangeable; same bore size and thread on the center and same gasket seating surface. Just like how you could install a Motorcraft FL-1A (the classic 302/351 Windsor filter) on a 2.2/2.5 liter Chrysler engine. maybe the 500 was used because it was a bit cheaper, or it was what they had on hand.

I've been using magnetti marelli filters on my 4.0 with no problems. Haven't really heard much about them though hopefully they are ok.

You can't go wrong with the Motorcraft filter unless you're running your oil beyond 7500 miles as I and others here do (full synthetic). It's rated well. IIRC, the FL500S is used on the newer Stangs but is interchangeable with the FL820S as mentioned.

And which filter should be used with full synthetic oil?

Amsoil & Royal Purple are both designed for longer oil change intervals.

The Amsoil Ea filters are rated for 25,000 miles but I personally wouldn't feel comfortable going much beyond 15k miles until I did some test or analysis. I typically go 10k-12k miles on the Amsoil Ea and the Mobil1 filters.
