Engine problems!
Okay guys I have a 2000 mustang GT conv, I bought it brand new, it has like 85 thousand miles...and Im having engine noises, It runs fine but at like 3 thousand rpms it makes a tapping noise, pretty fast...Im not losing power, its just a really bad noise, and it doesnt sound good. I took it to someone and he said Its bad and I should just get a new engine, what do you guys think? And where can i get a motor for cheap? a 4.6 gt or cobra? this is my last resort... Thanks guys

RE: Engine problems!
Either way a loud tick isn't good.
Now is the time to think about getting a new motor anyways. 85,000 miles isn't A LOT for a 4.6 mod motor but it's a lot compared to a fresh motor with 0 miles on it. If you have the money, I'd use it as an excuse to go ahead and rebuild it or swap.

You dont rebuild 4.6's atleast thats what i heard..they are disposable, but if I were to find a 00 cobra engine with low mileage will it bolt right in? Thanks for the quick replies guys I really appreciate it. I mean everything starts to go bad after the 3 year warrenty OF COURSE, bastards...but i dont want to sell it, hell I took it to one mechanic and he told me to put a thunderbird engine in it LoL, and sell it to someone without them knowing..., Im definately not doing that, I guess ill take it to my friend that builds motors, then go to a local junkyard and look for a crashed 4.6, Thanks Guys

RE: Engine problems!
May be a stupid question, but is there any chance it could be detonation or valve rattle? I had what you might call a tapping noise at around 3-4 grand if you got into it. Primarily when it was hot. New MAF, plugs and wires. No more problems. My plugs were gapped badly as well. Try unplugging your MAF and see if the problem goes away. If it does, you know its probably the MAF the cause. If it isn't reading flow correctly it will lean out the mixture and cause detonation. Generally also a slight loss in power though.
Valve rattle can be "expensive" as well, but it is certainly less expensive to correct than a new engine. Generally its VERY cheap to fix.
I can't imagine the engine is really going south at 85,000 miles.

haha they are..ask anyone who builds engines man, I hope its not nothing to big...but I can get a 4.6 with low milage for 100 bucks at the junkyard...that sound ****ty but the cars banged up not the engine at junkyards, like rear collisions or w/e, But before that ill get a tune up it really only does it when the engine is hot...then you can really hear it, i dunno why this mustang guy said its something really bad, if it was wouldnt i be losing power?

RE: Engine problems!
why dont you just take it to a good local mechanic you trust and let him find out. if you dont have a clue where to start looking for the problem (which it sounds like since you are asking here) I doubt you are going to be able to pull of an engine swap yourself, even if it is just same engine for same engine.
Pay 25-50 bucks and have it looked at. Chances are it might be something thats not a big deal, much better than trying to get off into something that may very well be over your head
