Default Speedo Problem

For a 1997 GT

A few days ago when I turned my car on and started driving the speedo wouldn't work just stayed at 0. Turning the car off and back on again fixed the problem. However it has happened twice more and now the speedo will NOT work even if I turn the car off and back on. Another time I was driving on the highway speedo at 55 and it just went to 0 as I was driving. What might be the problem? I unplugged battery for a while to reset everything but that didn't help.

maybe the mechanical gear is stripped? not sure, but I think the 97 has a mechanical gear from the trans to the gauges

I have the same problem w/ my 97. I put 3:73's in mine and changed the speedo gear. The speedo gear is plastic. My buddy thinks I might have stripped the spedo gear. You have to get into the trany to check it. He is checking it for me tomorrow. I do not know if that is your problem but it might be a thing to check. He is doing it at his house and said it nly takes about 20 min or less so I do not think it requires a lot of disassembly. Good Luck

If I am correct, all you need to do is jack the car up and there will be a piece of sheet metal attached to the tranny, behind that is the stuff for the speedo

you are correct just jack your car up and there will be your speedo cable on the left side of your tranny. there is one bolt, take it out and at the end of it is a plastic gear. check it, this takes no more that ten minutes
