if money is an issue (it was for me when i bought mine) go for the 96 and offer under 6 grand. i paid a little over 5grand for mine last year with 110k miles. just make sure the intake manifold has the aluminum crossover, if it doesnt then use that as a bargaining tool. if you got your heart set on horse power then a 99+ isnt shockingly better than a 96, i mean considering the price difference of around 3-4 grand (99s are at the lowest 8 grand around here). the fact that its an auto really sucks, otherwise it is an easy as hell car to repair/ work on. as for the engine holding out, mine had 115 on the clock when it was pulled for the engine swap, it still ran like a top with no oil leaks or knocking. i figure it would have lasted me another 50k miles no prob. its a reliable car, only big problem i had with mine was the intake cracking so make sure to check that, other wise itll cost you about 600-800$ to get replaced.
If you get it and it doesn't have the Aluminum crossover on the intake i have a almost new one in my garage I will sell you for $100 it wont crack! I just did a PI job and it no longer fits. Also I payed $6000 for my 96 bone stock with 80,000 the Automatic is your biggest Dilema, good luck.

i just got a 96 for 5800 off ebay. I think around 6000 is all ur gonna see for a 96. I looked for a while and 5800 was the best deal i could find so i hoped onit.
Not true!! I bought my 96 GT convertible TWO YEARS AGO for $3,700. A little coolant leak, but nothing a new manifold couldn't patch up. You can find a 96 GT in GREAT shape for about $4000. Don't give him more than a few hundred more than that!

And the car runs AMAZING. Never any problems, and I punish her like crazy. It is one of the most reliable cars I've ever had.

get a 5.0 cobra
He didn't ask what car he should buy did he? Nope.

I bought my 96' GT for $4800 when it had 67k miles. Never been in a car accident, no damage at all. Mine is fully loaded cept Leader (good think too!). The only thing that I have encountered is on a Manual Tranny when you are beating on it, going from first to second hard will cause a small gear grind. I know it doesn't happen on a lot, but a few people I have talked with tell me that it is the Gear Sycros (not to mention it ONLY happens when the tranny is cold...a few minutes of driving warms it up enough not to grind). But if it is an Auto, no problem!
