I've read in a SHM publication that they have used them in applications up to 500hp without breakage

I think 700 is puhing it, but from what I've heard the rods are the weakest link in the gt, not the crank. I'd still definately go with a forged block and internals if your gonna run that kind of HP.

I want to push 500-550 rwhp can I do it on just good rods and pistons?

get a cobra crank they are forged and ill sell you one cheap. hows $125 +shipping.
