I would go with the '98. You should be able to get atleast another year out of that motor. Hopefully that will give you enough time to save up for a motor swap. Swapping for a '99 or up would be about 2k-4k depending on if the motor is new or not. I did the same thing.

i got my 97 gt for pretty much 5 grand 73k miles...convertible.17 inch rims..i would go with the 98 then put in a 01-04 cobra engine in it. it sounds like it looks sick as ****

I think it only cost like 600 to have a car shipped to ya. My buddy did that with a BMW.

I think the 98 is overpriced, the nice rims and stuff you mentioned are not worth the cost of replacing a clutch that is probably shot, shocks/struts that are also probably shot, etc, etc. Personally I wouldn't go for the 96 as it is an automatic, but that is personal preference. If you are serious about either car ask the owner if you can have a repair shop look it over, at your cost. If the owner says no, or appears hesitant, walk away! It's not worth getting stuck with someone else's problem for over $5000 Also ask the owner for all the car's service records. That way you can see what has been done to the car, maintenence and repair wise. Someone also mentioned Carfax, this is a very good idea, and can save you major headaches!

Personally, I would keep looking, but it is your choice. Ebay is also a good place to look for cars, some sellers have free shipping, but most don't. Also check the blue book values of 96 and 98 GT's, this shows you how much a car is worth. Good luck!

i think you should wait to get a 99 and up, there a little cheaper now, i got my 99 gt for 4200. it needed a little body work and the milage was a little over 100,000

yeah i hear all of you but the 98 is so bad *** looking but he let me drive it and i can hear something clicking and when going over bumps u can hear a squiking nosie which id say is the suspension but it shift fine but i dont want to have to buy a 5k car and knowing the motor is going on it and then dropping another couple g's into for another motor when i could find a cobra or get the 96 and supercharge it so i think my decision is made im either getting the 96 or look for a cobra in my range and if anyone knows anyone selling a cobra in the 5-6k range let me know and if it is in the west/southwest it would be nice.

thanks
