Sunoco is the official fuel of NASCAR now that 76 has gone. Good enough for me AND they have a 94.

As usual mdvaldosta is correct about the octane only doing the job for detonation. That's why they used to add lead to gas...because it raised the octane level and let them run higher compression ratios and more advanced timing. Low octane fuel WILL light easier, that's what causes the detonation.

However, the "premium" gasolines ARE refined a little bit more and are generally a little cleaner...also for some reason my fuel mileage seems a little better with higher octane. Maybe because it burns a little more evenly and thoroughly, therefore, cleaner.

its not your fault my dumbass had to see it for myself. i go to advance and i try different fuel system cleaners everytime i go. they all seem to get the job done. i've even used octane booster at times, NOS octane booster.... can't really feel much of difference in hp, but it said it also cleans up your fuel system. does anyone know the mileage on fuel injectors before they start to go down hill?

and its called nitrous not NOS, thats what is on the label... the only reason that word came out of my mouth.

The car would run great and then sometimes under hard acceleration it would hit a flat spot mid RPM range, like the car was pulling timing.
You're right, it probably was pulling timing. Octane and Horsepower, while not directly related, do have something to do with eachother.

I am a firm believer that gas is gas, and if Ford says to put 87 in it, than anything else is a waste of money, UNLESS you have detonation. The problem is that you probably won't hear it ping. The car will retard the timing to overcome the detonation so fast that you'll never know it. Except for the loss of power, it might bog, and just be plain ****ty to drive. I have stopped using 87, because it severly effects the computer in my car for some reason. I had 87 in it one day, and it would bog when I let the clutch out, I'd run through the gears and it just felt like something was wrong with it. So on a hunch, I threw about 5 gallons of 107 in it. It was night and day. After it swished around a little, the car ran like a raped ape. So it's premium from here on out now.

I'm not saying that you should put race gas in your car, but any mods you have...i.e. CAI, stuffs more air in the engine, requires more fuel...Blah, Blah, Blah...Anything not factory stock should probably have a higher octane fuel in it, to get the best performance.

As for your MAF, upgrading it requires higher octane. You will have pinging unless you do.
what does an aftermarket maf have to do with pre-detonation? i dont see the relation
