We just purchased a 99 Mustang Cobra with 52k miles. AFTER we already bought the car I've been reading a lot on the internet about its problems and HP loss, etc. Did Ford ever fix these problems? If so how are these cars running today? Do they have the advertised 320 hp? Will the car i purchased not have these problems? Can I still get it fixed?

It should have been fixed, Ford did swap some parts to increase the HP for free. Contact Ford (just call a Ford dealership and they can direct you) and give them your VIN. They will check to see if any recalls are waiting to be done, and also can tell which ones have been done already.

 

is the car noticeably faster with these improvements? 320hp?

 

The 99 cobras had three problems:
1: The mufflers were overly restrictive, new mufflers were the fix for this fault.
2: The intake manifold had excessive casting flash which impeded airflow, a Extruded honed manifold was the fix.
3: The PCM was reprogrammed to get the hp numbers.

All together the 99 Cobra was down 40 to 45 hp from the claimed 320, pretty staggering huh? Lol. This recall was supposed to fix that. If you want more info about what recalls and service bulletins have been done for the 99 cobra click here

 

if the fix hasnt been peformed, you will get a recall notice in the mail a couple times a year from ford

 

Thanks a lot. My parents are on the way to Tampa to pick it up. That recall better put that car over 300hp or we might need to get a blower so i dont get smoked by my friend whos got a 98 cobra.

 

ehh, he only has 305, so you should be alright

ITs me again, Ive been driving the car and I LOVE IT, its So damn fast for a first car..My dads bringing it in to FORD tommorow to get a few extra sets of keys. He's also checking out to see if the car had the 320 hp mod. I hope not! Cause than ill have MORE SPEEDDDD AHHHH!!! My friends 305 cobra feels faster..
