Default Crown Vic 4.6

hey guys,
a buddy of mine just bought a 1998 crown victoria ex-police cruiser.
he has a pretty limited budget, and im a 5.0 guy, with a limited knowledge base on the 4.6 SOHC.
what kinds of things could he do to give it a little bit of extra pep, without breaking the bank.
anyone know a lot about the crown vic 4.6's? how restrictive is their intake, exhaust and so on.

he wants to do a cat-back, thinking SLP LMI's but the problem is everything is for a mustang.
how much trouble would we run into with a mustang cat-back system, installing it on a crown vic?
is it even possible?
thanks in advance guys

Weight reduction... lol I drove one, it was a 96... They're TANKS! (Yes, police interceptor)

The bolt-ons don't do much at all for the 4.6 SOHC... He could spend $4000 on all the bolt-ons and head work, or spend $4000 for a blower and end up with at least 2x the power

Edit: Take a look at Code's stang... I'm sure he's spent near a fortune to keep his 4.6 N/A, and it's in the neighborhood of 330 RWHP? Don't quote me on that number though. Drop on a blower for $4000-5000 and you'll be at 450 RWHP+.

Don't forget this is a 98 car, so it has the NPI heads/cams/intake. A PI swap from a 99-04 GT will do WONDERS for the car. A blower on a otherwise stock NPI car really won't make much power (for being blown anyway). Probably well under 300 WHP.

Also, a healthy set of gears would really help a heavy car like that. 4.10s at least.

Edit: Know that you will NEVER see 450 WHP on a otherwise stock PI 4.6 2v car without a crapton of boltons to go along with it, and even then your on the ragged edge of the stock shortblock.

yeah, any 99 or newer GT I am sure of. Not sure if the newer vic's etc had the PI engines.

I have heard anywhere from 1200 to 1500 bucks, but I am sure you could find a junkyard motor for cheaper and do it yourself.

If it was me, I would be looking for a low milage wrecked 99-04 GT to swap the motor into. Less hassle in the end, and you get a newer engine, plus you don't raise the compression like a NPI setup that is PI swapped does. This is only really a concern if you are gonna go witha blower down the road, but keep your options open.

300 WHP will require a little more than the PI swap, full boltons (exhaust/intake/pulleys)and aftermarket cams. That should come to somewhere in the 280-290 range. to get a true 300 you will probably need to port the heads.
