Diff between chip and tune??
If you remember my other post, i said i was offered a chip, a tune, and a dyno run for $500. Most people replied "forget the chip and buy a tuner". What exactly would the difference be? Should i not get the chip and buy a tuner?? Should i just have him tune it and dyno it and forget the chip?? Sorry i'm just not too familiar with this stuff..My mods are listed below..Thanx for the input!
I think on older FI cars your only choice was to replace the factory chip with a performance one. Tuners were invented later in life and, not even sure if there is any overlap in the years. Are there specific cars where you can choose to swap the chip OR use a tuner?
The difference between a Chip and Tuner is as follows;
A chip is something that needs to be tuned/changed by someone who has the appropriate tools/software to do so. A Chip is NOT a one time deal as it can be changed as many times as you are willing to have someone change it.
A Tuner allows the same changes that a Chip does but puts the owner in control of some of the changes (not always a good thing)
If you think you want to play with adjustments then a Tuner is the way to go...If you just want a pro to tune it and leave it be then the chip is the way to go.
I personall went with a SCT Switch chip over the XCAL 2 because i can change tunes on the fly and the Handheld cannot...that works good for me since i will have the main tune for the Supercharger then a second tune for the 100 shot of nitrous and a third tune for more boost and nitrous for the track. With the switch chip i can just click over to any tune i want...with the Tuner i would have to unload and reload each tune and that would be annoying. Plus the SCT switch chip was @ $100 cheaper then the Tuner.
It comes down to personal preference....do you want to play with your tune yourself, then get an Xcal...if not get a switch chip. They both do the same thing just one has to be done by a pro.

Your right the CHip is a one time shot. As you retune you either have to get another chip or get a good tuner adn someone who khnows how to use it.

So it sounds like the chip is the way to go for me then. My only mods after these will be a supercharger and maybe 3:73 gears. i have 3:55 now but might swith to 3:73s. The supercharger def won't be for another 9 months or so.
