does your check engine light come on when it dies? or does it ever come on?

Well i replaced the fuel filter 10 g's ago, no check engine light. I have the mil off with the tune. The other day it started backfiring with a cold engine and thats the first time its done that. I was thinking air/fuel ratio or timing but i havent touch that. Maybe vacuum leak, bad plugs or egr valve. I check the pcv valve and it seems fine.
