Default transmission

I have a 2001 mustang gt automatic. sometimes when the car goes in o/d it will shake kinda bad, like in a manual when the clutch is let out to fast. it mostly happens at low speeds. also when i'm just cruising, like around 45-65mph, it will do the samething, even though it is already in o/d. does this mean that my o/d is going out, or is this a common problem? Thanks

i had a similar problem, felt it in third too...was a broken transmission mount.

i'd get a free inspection at some shop if you could, as far as the mount, if its not that, i would guess your o/d band.

Mine is the same year with an auto and it jumps in and out of od at speeds lower than 50mph which feels kind of like it's a slippy clutch, so I just keep the od off unless I'm on the freeway. Mine has a 3:08 rear which is pretty high (and annoying at times).

jagrave, when yours is shaking is it like a really really bad vibration for about 40 feet or so then it just stops? Thats what hers is doing, maybe your trans is going bad. :-/

yeah its something like that, but not for that long of a distance. it'll do it like 5 times or so and then stop.

Thats what hers is doing...like i said, her trans has been rebiult too, due to a bad ex b/f...So if hers is messing up again then......He was doing everything you can do bad to a trans, power break, neutral drop, you mention it he did it...The trans tech said it was the worst abuse hed ever seen in a transmission....Anyhow im not saying you abuse it but, it could be going out.....see what im getting at?

I don't really abuse it i don't think. i do race sometimes, i have done the neutral drop a few times(but i was already moving at like 20 25mph and wanted to see if it would spin, and it did), but thats about it. i see what you're getting at. hopefully its not going out though. if anything hopefully something easy to fix. how much did the rebuild cost?

Yah man, anyhow her rebuild costed her around 2k but, that was for a 00 3.8 liter tranny also. A new trans wasnt that much more but she went for the rebuild just cuz she was so broke from dating that loser.

seriously, i had a similar prob. one time, in third, rev'd at around 2,500 rpm i got a violent, violent shake from the dash to the center console. only happened once. drove for another 8000 miles, never happened. still had other symptoms. one day messin w/ my exhaust i noticed i had play with the tranny, hence the broken mount. now, shes as smooth as silk. if the problem went unattended, it would of resulted in a lot of drivetrain issues. in fact the 12,000 miles i drove with it busted probably caused damage.

just sayin, worth a look =)
