Default PINGING

i have a 99 gt 5 speed ..... minor mods o/r X, pullies, CAI, and i bought a the predator tuner a few months ago.

Well i swear i hear it pinging, but only around 2500 rpms and mainly in 4th gear when driving normal. At WOT i can't hear it at all only the exhaust. Again i might just be looking for something i can only hear when radio off and windows up. I tried 8% all the way down to 1% advanced timing. I unistalled tuner it got a little softer but i still hear it. Hard to justify because the exhaust hits a different sound at 2500 rpms. It's almost like a high pitched metal/marble sound. I put factory MOTORCRAFT plugs and gapped them to .54 about 3 k miles ago. Seems like this started about 1500 miles ago. Last week IAC went out? I cleaned with carb cleaner! Could that effect anything?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

does it kind of sound like a ticking noise because i wonder if i have the same problem as you. i only hear it at a certain rpm and everything has to be turned off or rolled up in order to hear it. i was never really sure what everyone meant about pinging but maybe this is what it is. i hope you get some help cause i would kind of like it as well. later

now that i think of it, it did start around the time of a new clutch. I just had more exhaust work done 3 weeks ago. only place i think it could leak is around the headers.... becuase it was hard to get on without a leak. Every time i try to stick my hand around the pipe to feel for leaks i get burned................im at least 20 miles away from any car lift so hard to get it checked.

Pinging will get worse when the engine is hot and when it is pulling hard such as when going up a hill.
U can also hear it more when driving next to a smooth wall with the window open.

If the motor has been pinging for a while U can see it in the plugs in the form of blistering or tiny bumps on the electrodes.

It may be one or more cylinders - those may show the blistering more than others.

Sometimes if there is too much carbon build up it will raise the compression on some cylinders and cause the ping.

Hope it helps ...
