Default RTV vs Shifter Gasket

Ordering a MGW Short Throw Shifter soon and am trying to decide if I should get a shifter gasket as well or just use RTV to install it. Any advantages or disadvantages between the two? I am leaning towards the shifter gasket unless there is a disadvantage to it.

Eh, the shifter gasket is cheap and I've got one.. I just got one because I changed tranny fluid and decided I didn't want to use the RTV... Before I got the gasket, the RTV worked just fine.

no disadvantage to the shifter gasket. You can also go to the autoparts store and get the gasket material where you trace the shifter and make your own gasket.

So basically it is just a replacement for the RTV?

Cobrabob's shifter gaskets man.. they work great. The guy's a sponsor to the forums too... Just make sure you don't crank the shifter down too tightly and distort the gasket (if you decide to go that route).

Anyways, my vote goes to cobra bob.

Definitely go with the gasket.
Do you want to do this twice?

You can go with RTV and as long as it is done right......no worries.
However, when you put in a gasket, you are 99% home free unless you bolt it down incorrectly.

No mess, no worries with the gasket.

I wouldnt reccommend a gasket because when I screwed the base of my shifter down tight, over time it worked the gasket out of place and I had tranny fluid flying around everywhere under my shift boot and had to do the whole process over again. Get some gasket maker or high temp RTV and be done with it.
