Far left? I don't know about you New Edge guys but the cooling system light for me is far right, and I believe it's the same for you. So are you sure it was the cooling system light?
As for the bad sensor, the floaters in the coolant reservoir are known to sink, or rather, the post they float on gets build up on them so they get stuck and can't float up. Look in the reservoir, is the floater floating at the top? It doesn't really sound like that's the problem to me, but if you have an extra toothbrush laying around you can try cleaning off that post a little with it, but I wouldn't suggest using the toothbrush again no matter how sweet it smells.
Double check what light it is for us though.

Try checking out that floater then. If you take off the cap on the coolant reservoir (you know the standard warnings, don't take it off if it's hot, if it is warm use a rag while you release pressure so you don't get the **** burned out of you), the the floater is on a post just to the right of the opening. See if it's floating, poke at it with something (non metallic or else it'll stick to it and wont help you see if it's free floating), make sure when you push it down it comes right back up with no hesitation.
Also, I know you said it's fine, but double check that you do have enough coolant. That sounds like a system that is just a little low. When it's a little low, it can read fine until you give it a little gas and really get the system running, then it notices.
