Default 98 vs 99 Cobra

Im looking at getting a Cobra in the future (if I can convince myself to go domestic)
I know in 99 the body had major changes and also got independent rear suspension, which would be nice.
Which is faster though? I know they only added 15hp in 99 but the car also weighs more than the previous body style. Are there any reasons why the 99 is superior to the 98 or vice versa? Also, what changes did they make in 99 to gaint that extra 15 hp?

And Im also wondering if there were any changes between 96-98. Cuase if I decide to go with the older body style and there are no differences between the 96-98 models, I could get a 96 for cheaper and have money left for a few mods....

Basically Im just trying to look at my options, Im just trying to figure out what the best deal would be for under $10k.

Thanks

Just a piece of advise. Do youre self a favor and dont buy a 96. lol. first year for the DOHC in the Mustang and they had plenty of problems. My dad hs a 97, quick car.I can stay side by side an get the exact times as my buddy wth a 04 Mach 1. 98 comes with ifferent wheels. i do like the 96-98 body better, but thats just me. This is about you. So you pick what you ike beter.

the 96's had problems is bull. they had been in mark 8's since 93. they got their **** together by then i'm sure. i would go 96 just because they are more affordable.

I also considered getting a GT just becuase I could prob find a 2000 with very low miles in my price range but how much difference is there in teh cobra and GT?

Say a 96-98 cobra compared to an 00 GT?

what other changes were made between 96-98 besides the wheels in 98?

Any at all?

And in 99 what changes were made to the engine to get that extra 15hp? Isnt it the same engine as the 96-98 models?

The 99 cobra was first said to make 320hp but actually according to Ford made 316. Plus the rear suspension had inherent problems. Ford recalled existing 99's and then went back to the drawing board on them which is why there was no '00 Cobra. Oh, and nothing changed on the Cobras between 96 and 98 besides the wheels and Mystic was only made in 96 and Chrome Yellow came into play in 98.

Sounds like my best bet is a 96-98...
Do they have any known problems that I will need to look out for?

the 96 cobras had alot of major cooling issues. they do make a kit to fix these problems. these problems were fixed for 97/98. if you want a good clean cobra, 96-98, expect to pay at least 11 or 12K. you wont find a good 99 cobra under 15K, at least not very many.

you can go ahead and buy a 96-98 for under 10G's, but will most likely have high miles or a desperate seller. i'd recommend spending 12-15K and finding a good clean well taken care of one. it will save you money and headaches in the long run. and if money is tight for you, don't bother.
