Default new tune

I got an SCT tuner from American Muscle (as a gift) and downloaded it to my car. I then noticed a little detonation from 0-2000k rpm, and I had to retard the timing 8* to make it finally stop(or at least where you couldn't hear it). I have heard American Muscle's tunes aren't that great (canned), so would it be beneficial to get a new tune from somewhere else like Brenspeed? I heard I could order a tune for like $25 or so.

Is that good for your car to bump the timing back that much?

Well I don't know if it was 8*, butthe tuneon 0, and I took it back to -8. I thought I read tuners couldn't advance timing enough for detonation to occur, but I don't know.

dyno tune?
I don't know of any places to get a dyno tune in the Charlotte area. Plus there wouldn't be a great benefit with my few mods.

I had a SCT dyno tune with only a MAC catback, and I gained 12 rwhp. It's worth it.

You were using a good quality 93 octane right? Like BP/exxon/shell If you were running 93 octane and it was still pinging, replace the stock tune, and send that POS back.

Well since I already have a tune installed, it would probably be a less gain for me. Also, the noise came back, so I'm guessing the timing is not the reason. I cannot figure out the reason for this rattling sound coming from the drivers side of the engine only. It happens from around 1500-2000k when I give it partial throttle. Anyone got any ideas on this? I'm thinking about changing the plugs on the driver side...

Maybe I said it wrong...I had the MAC catback before the tune. After the SCT dyno tune(94 octane) I gained 12 rwhp.

Yeah, but did your car have a "canned" tune before the dyno, or did you buy the SCT and get a dyno tune at the same time?

Doesn't really matter if it came with a canned tune though, you can erase it and program whatever tune you want.
