Default Lean from a KN Filter?

Well, I pulled off my air silencer on my 96 GTand put a K&N high flow on the stock intake, didnt even put in a full CAI. After doing it, the car gave me a lean engine code, and everytime I go above 4000 it puts the code back on and pulls a ton of timing, killingmy power. Is there anyway for me to get it to stop pulling this code short of a tune? (I have yet to hear it knock). I cant believe that just a high flow air filter could put my ratio off so bad to throw a code /grumble.

my only guess on that is that the k&n let some oil on the MAF making it read incorrectly. thats all i could think of, i know tons of people that have CAIs or just K&n Replacements and have none of these problems, im one of them. try cleaning your MAF with some sensor cleaner

+1 if that doesnt work this is the first case I've ever heard of where a k&n by itself made a car run lean.
