How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
I just switched to synthetic oil, but I'm having trouble finding out how much it lasts. I've heard it has to be changed every 5K miles, 10K miles, twice a year, or change the filter every 5K miles and the oil every 10K miles. I want to know for sure so that's why I'm asking here.:)

If you are running a good synthetic blend it is dumb/pointless to change it so often enless you drive the piss out of your car.... Someone said they chage it every 3k miles just like directed? Well its not directing you to do this... if i remember right it says like 15k miles or twice a year.... You guys are only wasting time/money.
I run mobil 1 and i changed it at 3k miles and felt so dumb for wasting my money.... the oil looked as clear as when i first poured it in. |

Ive ran Mobil 1 oil/filter since I bought the car, but this time im switching to Royal Purple just for grins. I change mine every 3K or every spring, whichever comes first. I figure with puttinghundreds of dollars into my engine for mods, why skimp out on oil to see how long it will last...

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
Clean oil = clean filter

I have a 98gt and my manual states that you should change your oil every 3 months or 3000 miles.... THis may only apply to 96-98 models (may be different on 94-95 5.0's) . Also... My manual says to use 5w-30 oil... Not 20 like most of you use.. Like I said it may only be my hear of mustang...But regardless I use Mobile 1.. It seems pretty good.

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
Actually, "babying" and around town driving are the worst duty service you can have. If the engine never get HOT the water vapor and other low-end acidic nasties that are by-products of combustion never "burn" off--if you drive like that then you are in the severe duty cycle and should change the oil every 2500 to 3000 miles. It doesn't matter whether it's synthetic or dino, the bad crap will build up...I drive a minimum of 100 miles per day, and 400 miles a day every couple weeks, at mostly highway speeds and change the oil every 3k miles (currently Pennzoil Platinum Synthetic 10W-30 'cause I can get itfor a very attractive price at a place near the Speedway in Daytona)--oil is a lot cheaper than engines...

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
Is 5W-20 safe to use in hot climate area "40*c"?
as i use FORD 10W-30 and change it every 3k. |
RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
I don't know if it's "safe" or not, but I couldn't bring myself to do it and am running 10W-30 here in Flroida... If I was running dino I'd use 20W-50 (which is what we use in the older/other vehicles).

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
I start planning/thinking about my oil change at 3K. My Stang is my daily and I do a LOT of driving, so 3K comes up quick. I will absolutly not let it go past 5K, but I'd say an average oil change for me is after 4K. I don't totally believe that you need oil every 3K. I know overseas they'll go 10-15K miles before they do it.

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
Basically what everybody is saying is that no matter what kinda oil it is it gets dirty and nasty. As someone stated earlier it still looks clear, while it still may not hurt your car to keep it in there, i would rather have peace of mine and know that my oil is ok. plus our cars burn oil so after 3k it may be a lil low. between 3-5k is just a good habit to have.
And most companies base their claims on oil life on motors in general.Ppl that havestuff done to theirmotorspush them alot more than normal vehicles which may cause it to need to be changed more often. So like i said its just a good and safe idea. better safe than sorry |
RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
It also has a lot to do with the fact that very few people keep cars past 100k miles, you could run maple syrup and never change it and probably go 75k to 100k. I tend to keep 'em till at least 200k (I drove my '90 Miata to 245k, we had an '89 Celica with 322k).My wife's RAV-4 has 165k and runs like a top having been on a steady diet of 20W-50 (Florida) changed every 3000 to 3500 miles--we're expecting another 10 years out of it (@10k/year)...

RE: How Often Do You Change Your Oil?
I use AMSOIL - Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil (TSO)
SERVICE LIFE AMSOIL Series 2000 Synthetic 0W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for extended drain intervals in unmodified(1), mechanically sound(2) gasoline fueled vehicles as follows: Normal Service(3) – Up to 35,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. I may decide this summer to change at around 7500 miles or so, but undecided as of now. This company I believe was one of the first to come out with full synthetic. Check out the following website if you're interested:http://lubedealer.com/crbsales/home.aspx I also use AMSOIL ATF in my GT's manual tranny, filling about .75" below the fill hole - which has helped with the reported 1st - 2nd gear grind many are familiar with in the TR-3650. Everyone has there own perspective on oil change interval and product. I'm putting my trust in a company that has tests and info to backup their products and has been in business forever. If my engine seizes up before my one-year oil change interval, I'll let you know. Good luck with whatever way you decide. |
