Default HELP

Can someone please help me out, since I got my 2002 gt mustang i have had nothing but problems. Firstly, the speedometer is 10 mph faster than what i actually drive, and the car is rocky at all times. In first or second gear the car rocks back and forth, and it seems like I am getting no power when I am accelerating. Even when I go to 4rpms in 2nd I can not go past 20-30mphs. Can anyone help?

Sounds like the car has aftermarket gears and a bad clutch

probably clutch.

and either new gears or if its ALWAYSexactly 10mph faster than what you are actually driving perhaps he put in an aftermarket guage backing (whatever you call it) that required the needles to be pulled off and he didnt put them back on in the correct spot.

the needle is an easy fix...if it was from gears then you can just get a speedcal for like 60 bucks. if it was from removing the needle and put on improperly then just take the dash cover off and reposition it. make sure which it is first. you can do this 1 of 2 ways.

1) if you got a friend with an identical car (5speed gt with stock gears) then get him to set cruise at 40mph, then drive next to him or behind him at the same speed in the same gear (ignore speedo). ask him to record his rpm and you do the same. if its the same rpm/speed its a needle problem, if your at higher rpm you got new gears.

2) find one of those radar speed signs and go past it at say 20 and 40 on your speedo and see what it says when your doing both speeds. then check the differences, if its not the same mph difference each time gears were changed (gears wont always be the same exact difference, the difference gets greater the higher your speed is).

sorry kinda long

To check if you have aftermarket gears raise the rearend, place a mark on the driveshaft and have a buddy spin the rear tire one full rotation and count how many times that mark goes by. If it goes by 3 times plus 1/4 then you have stock gears and your needles are off. If it goes by 3.5 times then you have 3:55 gears and so on.

If your needles are off because of whiteface gauges installed or used to be installed then just pull the plastic cover and the needles. push and hold the trip reset button and start the car. Continue to hold the button until it says "TEST" then release. Keep pushing the button until you see "ENG" that is your digital dash readout. Go for a drive on a long straight road and set the cruise control. Set the needle according to what it says. You can also do this to the tach if you keep pushing the button until it says "tach".

It does sound like you have a bad clutch, as for the rocking back and forth you need to describe it a bit more in detail.

Th speed problem has been pretty much fixed by the previous posts but the poor driveability could be due to a dirty MAF element,Start by cleaning the little spring-looking wire in the MAF with alcohol, cotton swab, and a very gentle touch. You can also use a spray-on electrical contact cleaner. If the screen has been removed and/or replaced make sure the screen wires run perpendicular to the MAF element.
