knocking I think
I'm having some issues here...
over the last week I could hear a faint rattle/chatter in 4th gear around 2500 rpms, but dismissed it as no big deal. Over the last two days it has steadily increased to now doing it in all gears at all rpm ranges (louder w/ revs) and in idle too. I think it is coming from the driver valve cover area BUT when the engines on it's hard to really be sure. If I had to guess what knocking sounded like I'd say it was that, but doesn't knocking cause exhaust smoke? I took all the plugs out and made sure they were all still in there snug...checked the oil and its fine.
the sound just is getting really obnoxious towards the middle rpms in and out of gear...clutch in or out. When I'm driving on the highway its very audible outside the car (I can hear it echo)

It could be any number of things as it is right now,exhaust leak,collapsed lash adjuster,timing chain adjuster,bad rod bearing,piston slap,detonation,,,,etc.
