mutually exclusive?

i'd like to start modding my mustang ('03 GT - 5 speed)with enhancements that would give me both more power and better fuel economy.

is this realistic? and if so what could i do? it'd be nice to get 30 mpg on the highway and make my 4-pot driving friends feel stupid.

i'll get to the more performance oriented mods when gas prices (still almost $2 a gallon for 87 in california) come down.

thanks

well get a cold air intake a full exhaust port and polish your head. you can get 3.55 gears it shouldnt hurt gas millage in town by more than 1mile per gallon but ill be the best and cheepest mod. after those mods you will be lookin at a full second off your 1/4 mile time possibly more. but expect to pay about 1300 for everything. also you can get some grippy tires. good luck man.

mmm thats a good one, more gas mileage.... well just about any mod is gonna cost money, and even if you got 1 or 2 more miles per gallon, it probably would take years to pay for the costs of even a simple upgrade, if thats the way your justifying it.

Hmm, cheap & easy & better gas mileage.... lets see... cat back exhaust will do that and so will a chip or timing adjuster, but you would have to run better gas most likely so, Im for yanking your air silencer (free)& a cat-back exhaust.

Oh yea, that would be cool, a 30 mpg mustang!

underdrive pulleys, aluminum driveshaft. A timing advancer or chip depending on what future mods you do and the order you do them in.

right on, thanks for the suggestions. i'm pulling the silencer out tonite. I think i'll go for the pulley's next since they're pretty cheap. i'd like to stay away from things which require premium gas.

i'm justifying the mods by the increase the HP, the economy is just icing on the cake

(i know it's been mentioned, but what the hell) exhaust=fuel economy (when you lay back on the throttle right?)...not generally huge gains, but everyone gets exhaust sometime. bassani, magnaflow, flowmaster...ask around on here, those are the chosen brands despite flowmaster being opposed by some.

Improved gas milage.(LMAO)
The first step to recovery is admitting that you have a need for more speed problem.
