I Have the T-45 Blues! Help Me!

I got my 2000 GT 2v rebuilt and back on the strip last weekend. I got a good dynotune and the engine is great. It's s/c'd, forged, big fuel, big spark, etc., etc. Produced 492 rwhp (on Mustang Chassis dyno....not a DynoJet!). I ran a 12.09 at 115. Problem: I think my T-45 gave up on the last run. It drives OK, but sings really loud in 1st and 2nd. It also makes a "zipping" sound in between gears when shifting slowly. Seems to drive fine though.
QUESTION: I've read that T-45s are not strong enough for built engines. Is that right? What next?? I want something that I don't have to change clutches, shorten driveshaft, change mount position, etc. for. TKO500/600? T3650? Or I can rebuild it for a $267 kit. What? Thanks.

A T-45 wont last too long with that kind of power at a drag strip. If you have the cash a TKO500 would be nice. You can get either the 10 or 26 spline input shaft depending on your clutch (stock T-45 is 10 but 26 would be a nice upgrade). A TR3650 would be a waste...

What adaptors will I need to make a TKO500 work with the T-45 bellhousing, etc. or will it? Anyone reading this using a TKO500? I like what I read. They are good for 500 lbs of torque.

I have a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch. Output shaft is 31 spline, right?

The bellhousing is integral to the T-45, its all one piece. You'd have to get a bellhousing along with the TKO transmission, which can usually be ordered all as one package deal (it also comes with a short throw). Thats the good part though, you'll be able to remove the transmission from the bellhousing should it ever need work. Especially nice if you have longtubes. The centerforce you have is a 10.5" 10 spline clutch. Just order the TKO with a 10 spline input shaft (though the 26 spline is stronger). 2000GT4.6 has a TKO500, you can ask him about it too...

Good info. Thanks. This seems the way to go. Are there other trannys that 4.6 guys are using with success for built engines or is the TKO about the only choice?

The T-56 but you'll need a new driveshaft etc...

TKO 500, and get it with the 26 spline shaft. DO NOT waste your money on rebuilding a T-45.

T-56 is not worth the extra money, stick with the TKO 500/600
