Default Drain on Diff.???

I was suprised that there is not a drain plug on the rearend of my 99_GT. I hope they were able to get all the old oil out witha pump. Also when he pulled the fill plug no oil ran out. It needed some fresh 75/80w lube. I also had the coolent flushed. It was only good to 0 deg. and was dirty. Now its clean and good to -34 deg.

there is a plug on top for filling and that's it. the only way to drain it is to take the bolts off the cover and pry it off or use a pump. Also, the fill plug is above the level of the appropriate amount lubricant so taking it off shouldn't let any out. did you watch them do the whole thing?

Yeshe let me come down and look myself. I watched him pump it out and put about 2qts. back in. It should be fine. Thanks for clearing this up. I am used to a drain and fill plug.

Most basic lube shops wont go through the trouble of pulling the cover off because its too time consuming. I'd say the better and more thorough way is to actually pull the cover and drain it that way. However, the suckers are usually pretty good about getting most of it, i'd bet there's still 0.5 - 1qt of old fluid still sitting up there though.

those pumps blow, we use em at my shop, I would redo it and drain it all the way, but I am super ****. Most new vehicles dont have drain plugs, sucks for the pit man, HA, lol. OR you could buy a rear diff cover with girdles that has a drain on it.

2 qts eh? The diff holds 4 so that didn't work too good I'd say. To do it right you have to remove the cover or buy a cover that has a drain in it. You still have two quarts of old fluid in there.

I think i'll look for a cover with a drain plug. That sounds like the best long term plan. Thanks alot.

1.66-1.77-liters (3.5-3.75-pints) + 118 ml (4 oz) of friction modifier according to the shop manual, about 2 qts. all together...
