Oil pan / capacity (yes, I searched)
Just purchased a 1999 GT a few weeks back. It has a brand new crate motor in it and a slew of other parts with about 150 miles on them at purchase time. I want to do my first oil change next weekend since I have about 1,000 miles on it but after searching on here I want to make sure I put the right amount of oil in.
Since it is a 1999 it looks like it takes 5 quarts, but since the engine was a brand new crate motor what are the chances it has the later year oil pan upgrades that bumped the capacity to 6 quarts?
Is there any to identify which pan I have? Would running the numbers on the engine at Ford work?
I don't like going by the dip stick since all of my 4.6 engines have always read wrong, my F150 called for 6 quarts, so I put 6 quarts in it and then marked the stick where it hit, which was 1/2 way down on the full line, that was full for me since the capacity was 6 quarts. Explorer and Expedition were the same way.
Thanks,
adam

RE: Oil pan / capacity (yes, I searched)
to my knowledge Ford dipsticks just have a habit of reading low. i worked at an oil change shop in high school and most Ford cars and trucks we had in there read 1/2 quart to 1 quart low even after putting the required amount in. put 5 quarts in there, start it up to get the oil flowing through the filter, then check the dipstick. if it's not in the marked range, then add another quart. this won't do any harm to your engine if it requires 6 quarts and you put 5 in there, just don't go driving around for a long time if it's low on oil. and your oil level doesn't have to be all the way to the top of the "full" line to be full... most of the time it will show about 1/2 quart low on the dipstick, because you're never going to get the entire 6 quarts to drain back down into the oil pan after shutting it off.

I would check it after 5. Be sure to turn it on let it all cycle through. and then check it. it may be a little off but it is not a big deal. plus you can always add more if nedded. but once again you don't want to be driving on low oil. so just use your best judgement. i have a mustang gt 99 and it holds 5 also. i have not had a problem as far as oil is concerned yet.
