Looks good to me. Suggest looping a rag over the companion flange & pull on it to put some drag on it then turn the ring gear through in both directions. It needs to turn through smoothly. If you feel any kind of gear mesh it will be noisy. I like .008 for the lash between the ring & pinion.

EDIT: just noticed this is your first attempt. Be sure you have somepinion bearing preload, There should be some drag on the pinion when turning it. Same thingfor the carrier bearings.

thanks for the input church.
And is there a big negetaive for having too much preload on the pinion? i couldnt find a inch/pound wrench so i did it by feel. its notciably tighter and this is on used bearings

Looks good to me as well. Check this link out, it is what I used when I installed my gears. Gives you the backlash specs and what not: http://www.superstallions.com/tech/d...ars/gears.html

IF the pinion bearings are to tight they will fail. IF you can turn the gears through by handusingthe ring gear only you should be good to go. IF you need to turn the pinion while trying to turn the ring gear to get them to rotate you have it too tight.

Trying to give my best description here. It is difficult to describe how something should feel.

Hey those are great links, thanks. MAybe those links and/or info should be stickied? and i totally coulda have used that superstallions article few days ago!

And church, i can turn the ring gear by itself, not too diffcult

And i forgot to mention, compared to my old pinion, the pinion i put in is harder to spin(used bearing). old pinion i could turn it easily by my hand, now i need to exert a little force to turn it.

put a new pinion bearing in. you'll be tearing it down again. old bearings do not like to be re-torqued. they are cheap. You can rent an inch lbs torque wrench from autozone, the torque has to be close on the pinion bearing will wear out really fast. also don't forget to replace your wheel seals.

i understand, thansk american ricer, I wanted to get my car running asap so i could go to one of the mustang cruisees this weekened. hmm maybe ill have to miss it, or i may just retorque it and run it so i can make it to the cruise. but is the wheel seals really necessary? i have seals and new bearings but dont wanna go though all that trouble yet
