Default Clutch problem?

I was teaching my dad how to drive my car b/c he doesn't know how to drive a manual. He wasn't really getting the whole bring the clutch up and at the same time apply consistent gas. I told him rev it up to 2k and then let the clutch out. He did it a few times, but was really slow getting off the clutch. All of a sudden their was this ungodly bad smell, and I figured it was the clutch burning up. I told him we were done for the day, and he is really worried about b/c there was a bit of smoke and it smelled hella bad. Is there anything we should be worried about? I drove it today and it was fine, though right as I pulled into my driveway I thought I kinda smelled the clutch again, but I turned it off anyways b/c I was home.

He just burned it pretty good. Nothing to worry about, but when it comes time to replace it, you have an excuse for him to get you a new one.

Well, since your car is new, it will still be okay for a while. It all depends on how you drive it. If you beat on it a lot, it will wear out sooner, but it should last fine with daily driving. How many miles do you have on your car? If you notice your car slipping or something doesnt feel right you can replace it. I just recently replaced my clutch (king cobra clutch for $180, I love it). Im not sure if it was the stock clutch that I replaced or not but it was real bad. Im at 113k, so if that was the stock clutch I just replaced it sure lasted long, lol. Just keep driving it like you have been and if it gets bad, make your dad pay for your new clutch!

thanks for the info.

lol haha yea my dad wouldnt be too thrilled to pay for a new clutch, but hey it was his fault right

My car just hit the 5000 mile mark (I don't drive it that much, had it since May of last year). I am a pretty normal driver, I don't beat on it or baby it TOO much. Shift at 2k like 95% and the other 5% of the time have fun with it. Not a personal preference, just have to with the gas prices the way they are right now.

Oh, you're definitely fine then. I think him taking off half of the clutch life is exaggerating a little. With only 5000 miles, your clutch will last for a while. You have nothing to worry about with your clutch for a long time.

Yeah, I just replaced the clutch in mine. Clutch was still solid at 98,000, but the throw out bearing puked it's guts out. The only time I've ever pulled a clutch and had ball bearings hit me in the chest!!

He didn't kill it. With those low miles he just varnished your pressure plate a little. <grin> It'll be fine for a looong time.
