Default ? about preperation for cams

Im thinking about getting some xe270s or vt stage 2 cams. I know and understand why you need to get stiffer valve springs for new cams but it also says that you should have steeper gears and a higher stall(i have an auto). Why is this and is it really necessary?

The steeper gears and higher stall are recommended because the more agressive camshaft grinds like the stage2 etc loose quite a bit of power around idle to say 2000-3000 RPM. The steeper gears and stall are to get you into the powerband quicker where you can take advantage of the cams.

IMO you should definatly get gears and a stall before cams on an auto car anyway, the gears/stall are going to net you much better results than any cam swap.

you will need notched pistons for those comp cams but you dont for the vt cams.

He shouldn't need valve reliefs if he has the cams degreed. The VTs are nice since you can swap them for the stock ones and just line up the stock timing marks. But if your gonna go to the trouble of swapping cams, why not have them degreed?

+1 on the gears. Right after I put my VT stage 1s in, I took it for a test drive (it was still N/A at this point) and I felt the need for gears even with those. Your going to lose a fair amount of low end power, but it worth it for the high rpm power and that amazing sound.

Got the xe270's, they are great imo compared to stock and make lots of top end power * full bolt on's with p+p heads and stock pi intake, peaks out at 6300 rpm* The gears are not needed but would be great to have, with stock gears its a real dog starting off in stop and go traffic. I need to rev to 3k and ease the clutch out so it wont buck. The bottom end is real weak, but at 3k rpms itstarts to make power from then on out and they pull like a ****As far as stall im not sure.. but i hope that gives you a idea of how they behave as far as power curve.I did have to get my pistons notched as well with the stage 2 comps.
