Are automatic mustangs slower than manual mustangs? is there a horsepower difference or just a shifting difference?? Also... should i get a diablo chip?? I see lots of people have them but one person said i shouldnt... What are the hp/torque gains from getting one?

Yeah bud, auto transmissions rob a lot more power than a manual transmission. I could be wrong about the number, but I believe autos rob about 20% of the total power of an engine. Also autos tend to shift much lower than the optimum power band of your engine, so the highest RPM you will hit cruising around is probably something like 2500, which is good for mileage, not so good for performance. Plus, unless you are brake standing, it's a lot harder to peel out in an auto...<IMG src=smileys/smiley2.gif border="0">You don't want THAT do you??? </P>

I haven't had any experience with the Diablo chip...but if memory serves, a chip won't do you much good on a stock engine. Power gains will be negligible.</P><edited><editID>USAMuscle</editID><editDate>37910.0909837963</editDate></edited>

No a chip wont do much at all for a stock engine exceptjack up the timing. Now it will firm up shifts alot in an auto, so if you have an auto a chip is a great idea, even for a stock mustang. And USA is right about the autos using morehp to run that standards, but around 20% is the average driveline loss in an auto, where a MT is around 12 - 15%. That is for the entire driveline, tranny, driveshaft, rearend, and tires.</P>

so to make up for it put in some 3:73 and a 2500 stall with shift kit....and you'll be even or better by a tick

Chips are a waste of money until you have completed your mods. And if you did several mods it's better to have a custom chip burned, which will only be a few bucks more than a on the shelf chip.</P>

The problem is, every car runs differently. You can build 50 identical cars, and they will not see the same gains from the same chip in every car. This has been proven time and time again.. No 2 motors operate the same, and it's baffled engineers since the existance of a combustion engine.</P>

Nothing beats a custom burned chip.</P>

My 2000 Mustang GT was an auto and I had a Diablo Chip and 3.73 gears. The car ran great until I replaced the 3.73's with 4.10's. With the 4.10's the car would constantly downshift and then upshift when under fool throttle. I took it to Diablo Sport in Florida and they told me that automatics have a real hard time shifting properly when you lower the gears that much because the Diablo Chip is having to process the information much quicker and it can be a problem. After about 6 hours they finally got it programmed right using a 3.73 program even though I had 4.10 gears. I think it is just the Diablo Chip though and you may not have any of these problems if you use another chip.

stock AODEs take more away than 20%. Most of the V6 guys I know with automatics usually see a 22-24% loss.
