Default Differntial??

So umm when I am in overdrive and I let off the gas I noticed the rear end of my 01 jerked pretty hard, well really hard. I recently unhooked the batter, could this just be the computer getting reacquainted with the car? It feels almost like an engine brake when I let off of the gas, but the rpm doesn't change at all.

Depends? Was this problem there before you unhooked the battery? Does it happen in any other gear other than 4th? The overdrive gear in AOD's are known to have problems and fail without warning. At first when I read your problem I was thinking more along the lines of maybe a u-joint or something but I'm not so sure about thatsince you never mentionedwhether or not it wasdoing itin another gear. How many miles are on the transmission? How longhasit been since you changed your transmission fluid? Give it a change and or flush and see if that helps. Or check your fluid and see what condition it is in? If it is brownish or has aburnt smellthen the fluid needs to be changed. If it is pink andsmells rather pleasant than it should be okay.

I know when I had problems in my older fox body mustang in that AOD which also has a weakoverdrive band...before it went out itpopped out of 4th pretty violently andabruptly for awhileand then finally gave out to where it would just rev in 4th gearbut noacceleration until I shifted back into third gear.

I don't know what else it could be?

It only started happening after i disconnected my battery. I just checked the fluid and it's a muddy orange color more than anything. The smell certianly isn't "pleasant" but if it does smell burnt it is a very slight smell. There are 85,000 miles on the transmisson. If this does end up being a failed AOD how much would it cost to fix with labor(estimate)? I've been thinking about doing a manual swap for a while now if my whole transmission fails.

If it has no pink coloror clearnessto the fluid...then your fluid has broke down or been contaminated. Something tells me that your fluid probably has not been changed before? Also it might not smell burnt but if it is rather unpleasant like you described...your fluid is pretty old. New transmission fluid in my opinion has a rather pleasant smell than most other fluids that run thru your car.Iwould say just change it and see if that helps. I have heard if you do a flush also that might help but have also heard it to be bad too. Maybe someone else can chime in about...something to the effect that it might distrub some components inside the tranny causing failure that otherwise wouldn't have happened before the flush? Like I said I am not to sure on that one but if you have a tuner...check for codes and see if that brings up something? It could also be just your overdrive band going out...and not to sure on the cost to get that replaced But the rest of your transmissionshould be fine as long as the fluid breakdown hasn't caused any other premature failure of parts inside the transmission.

Not sure on a total replacementcost but if yourgoing to do something like that and stay with theauto...I would get it built up...incase you decide to stepup the horsepower...these transmissions arepretty goodfrom thefactory but you can't neglect the fluid changes...anything will wear out or break without maintenance. I am sure the manual guys would recommend you go manual...but that isup to you...you could always just buy an auto from a junkyard off a wrecked stang? I am sure you get one for less than a$1000 if money is concern for you?
