t45 trans cobra vs gt
T-45 from 1996-98 GT are different than the Cobra Mustangs. The transmission mount point is moved further back for the Cobras and as well as a 8 tooth drive speedometer gear. Cobras T-45 are equipped with a 7 tooth speedo gear. In 1999 all T-45's were changed to the Cobra specs. Why this was not done earlier is not understood. there are a few other differences but not real sure what they are. the real question is why does it matter, they both suck. if your buddy has tranny problems, a T45 is not the solution. Tell him to go with a TKO 500/600 or a T56, but stay away from the T45.
I know the t45 sucks but his needs a rebuild. He can get a cobra t45 for $350 which will get him by for now. He wants to upgrade to the tr3650 but can't find one right now at a decent price. So the cobra t45 is what he's looking at. Will this be a direct bolt on with little to no modification or is it not worth the time?
The Cobra T45 is not worth it. I ran for about a year with a Cobra T45 in my GT with a bracket I made but every time I got on it hard the thans would move and hit the bottom of the floor pan. Just have the GT T45 rebuilt

you're close to stock power, or you're luckier than a box of lucky charms. can't go wrong with the trannys he suggested TKO500/600 but the 600 is mainly for higher power applications, the gears are different, anyhoo the t56 is a pretty solid tranny, with 6 gears, the tko's have been known to take well to abuse(better than the t56) because they are true aftermarket trannys, as opposed to the t56 which is a good tranny, but is mass produced, either way you shouldn't really have a problem, ive seen termis runnin 9s with their stock t56s, but it will cost you a pretty penny, a good bit more than the TKO 500... which would probably be ur buddys best bet.
I would say go with a t56 or TKO500/600 like they just said. The tr3650 thats they used in the late 2001-2004 normally have problems with the synchronizers in 2nd and 3rd gears. Although mine is just now starting to act up every once and a while with 61k on it. But its kinda just hit or miss kinda thing.
guys, he doesnt wanna upgrade it sounds like
the t-45 from the cobra should work, i did the swap because my t-45 gave up after 130,000, because im at stock power and dont wanna spend the millions to upgrade. you will have to swap over the tailshaft and also the speedo gears. pretty straight forward. then put the transmission into the car. boom done.

If you do use a cobra T45, you will have to modify the bracket and a few other things, but it's pretty much plug and play.$350 is not verycheap anyway. There's one onHouston craiglistthat I went and looked just last week because the guy thought it was a T56 which was what I was looking for, but he only wants $200 for it and it's almost brandnew. Has less than 10kmiles on it.Ifyour buddies car is driveable,I would just tollerate it until he can afford a better tranny.
