Default shock/strut question

Alright I have a 02 GT and I just ordered the eibach sportline series springs. I also have 4 bolt cc plates. I read that you will also need new shocks/struts too, which is obvious. My question is what brand should i get and where is a good place to get them. I heard Blistren was one of the good ones but is there anyothers? Please Help!!

OK...

First let us clear this up...

You definitely do not need shocks, they can give you a ride that will compliment your new springs, but the stock ones will work just fine….And if anyone tells you that the stock shocks “will go bad†if you leave them in place is talking out their backside.

I have read some people here think that you need new shocks and struts, but that is crap.
Every time I see someone talking that crap I ask but no one can ever tell me how a shock "goes bad" after a drop.

A shock does nothing more than dampen the ride, it does not have "progressive damping" so as long as the shock is riding in it's intended range of travel it does not care if it's 1" into it or 2" into it as long as it does not hyperextend or bottom out.. It will not bottom out because you still have stock bumpstops, and it is less likely to hyperextend because you are deeper into the stroke to begin with. All shocks ride in the middle of the shock stroke, that way the tire will drop into a pot hole instead of the whole car dropping in.

...and remember 2 inches of drop is not 2" more into the shocks travel, your tire is at the end of a lever (A-arm) and your shock is towards the middle of the lever so....less change.

If you want to compliment your new springs, by all means get some, if it's just because someone told you to get some, spend your money on something better.

Hey Blue70
Im not arguing with you cause I really dont know much about it. My 98GT is lowered 2in. w/ intraxx lowering springs and it has an extremely bouncy ride. Ive been told it was due to the shocks being under more pressure and to correct this I would need to get new shocks and struts that would accomodate for the lowered springs. Just wanted your take on this cause after reading what you wrote I dont beleive new shocks/struts would help my ride at all.

Shocks are the only things that keep your car from bouncing, so it does sound like you need new shocks.....BUT I don't believe the reason that was given to you.

Shocks are charged with a gas (usually nitrogen) to keep the shock oil from foaming and losing its ability to properly dampen the ride, but a shock is not under any more pressure the deeper it is into its stroke. To prove this for your self, get a new pair of shocks and compress them slowly. It will take the same amount of force to compress all the way through its travel. If it was really the way it was told to you it would take an increasingly greater force to compress the shock through out its range of travel.

If your shocks were pretty much shot before you got the new springs, the new stiffer spring rate of your new springs would exacerbate the bouncing feeling of worn shocks.
If you put in new shocks and it still bounces, the spring rate of your new springs is way too much for your car

Awesome. Thanks man. I guess if I had actually thought about it I could have figured it out. Thanks for explaining it!
