I was going to say sounds like the tranny to me, you should take it to a specialist though - depending upon your planned future mods, some rebuild shops can fix and diagnose problems pretty reasonably, but a good used tranny is pretty cheap

yea, the direct drive clutch on the overdrive gear went out, and since its at the back of the transmission, the shop wants to do a complete rebuild. im just going to swap a 5 speed in there instead, along with a few other goodies lol

To my knowledge, the only time the torque converter locks up is when it's in Overdrive, so it sounds like there may be something wrong with one of the sensors, or some sort of pressure issue...
