Default head porting

my friend works at a place that only does heads and cams, and they said that they would port my heads for 1000. is that reasonable?

You enlarge the intake and exhaust ports, pathways within which the air travels to and from the valves.

the company i was going to go to here in ohio was going to do the port job for 1300 (RIP OFF). So I've decided to get a new set of heads and cam, along with some other forged internals and have it all installed at once for about the same price.

Is that just the port and polish, or are they gonna install larger valves etc? You can get a set of ported&polished heads with valves and springs from 2 companys now for like 1400 bucks or so.

I wouldn;t pay 1000 bucks just for a port and polish when the seperate heads are avalaible for 1400. And you can sell your stock heads to someone with a 98 and below who needs some PI action

To give you an idea on how much HP a decent port can add, look at the difference in the 95-98 Mustang V8's vs 99-04. Much of the HP gain was because of the Intake/head ported out slightly and a minor change in the plumbing of it (straigher). That made the GT go from 225hp to 260hp Over half of that was with porting alone.

On average, porting can add 10-15hp over stock.

The head is the key to the biggest power gains. Just be sure they don't overport. It can cause cracking in the runners of the intake or between ports on the head.

Make sure they know about your heads, porting can hurt just as much as it can help if not done right.
It's not just a game of remove as much material as possible.
Velocity is just as, if not more, important than volume, Chevy Vortec heads are proof of that. Tiny 1.94 valved heads that make a lot more power than “2.02 Corvette Camel Hump†heads.
