Default Changing Diff Fluid...

I am leaking gear oil from the front of my differential and I assume its my pinion seal. How much do you guys think repair cost will be? I am not going to attempt this one on my own since I don't have access to a lift and don't feel like trying to do it with the car on jack stands.

I probably won't have the repair done until next month though since I am kind of tight on dough at the moment. I feel like I have lost enough fluid though that I need to top it off / change it out.

Can I get by with just adding more fluid, or do I need to drain and replace the fluid all together? Do I need a gasket for the diff cover or just use RTV sealant?

Do it yourself and it will cost you 20 bucks. Diff fluid and a pinion seal(go to checkers and get an SFK seal). Its the best seal out there dont go to auto zone and ge tthe timken seal it sucks ***.

Jack the car up level it out pop the diff cover off let the oil drain. Take the driveshaft off then use a puller to get the rear seal off. Reseal it with RTV and hammer that SOB in there and you're good to go.

Is the "puller" a specific tool for the the pinion seal and can you rent it from a parts store?

Yes, but you don't need a puller. Ford and other auto manufacturers want you to use "special" tools so you have more **** to buy, but you can usually get by without.

A hammer and flat head screw driver will get the seal out just as well as a "puller".

yea ive done it on jackstands and i used the motorcraft sealer from ford and it worked awesome. On the bottle itself it said for use on diesel trucks, so im guessing if its strong enough for a HD truck then im good

if i had no problem doing gears on jackstands, you wont have problems doing a seal on jack stands
