99 has better heads and more secure intake manifold.
and yes, it has about 30-40 extra hp over the 97.
i dont know where montana got 300 and 330 at, but you can expect about 195 from the 97 and 225 from the 99 ( on average ).
I also prefer the newer look as well...good luck!

The 99-00 Cobra had intake issues with the runners. As a fix ford replaced the intake and exhaust to meet the advertised HP and TQ numbers.
I would go with the 99 regardless..

anyway i would get a 99 b/c of the body style
96-98 cobra 305 hp 300#s of torque..4 valve heads with 8 ports per hear one for each intake valve, they used an i.m.r.c. plate (intake manifold runner controller) to boost low end torque...97-98 heads are call c heads, they are not as good for a n/a applicatoin, but they flow better for a turbo or supercharger setup.
99-02 cobra 320 hp 320#s of torque new head design called tumble port, one intake hole for both intake valves in cylender. 99s had intake problems that wher fixed on later modles, heads on these are better for n/a applications, but work well with supercharger, no i.m.r.c, less hassel.
both engins have the same bottom end. both have the same power potential, 96-98 uses a less complicated computer . the 96-98 do get better gas milage if that matters too you
