caliper closed up...help

the rear drivers side caliper is off the rotor, and i went to put it back on but its closed up. both pads are touching eachother and the pads wont push apart. help please

rmodel65 02-09-2009 04:54 PM

unscrew the bleeder work a screwdriver in there, just enough to remove the pads. pull them out. force the pistons home with your hands or pad spreader.

bleed the rear brakes since you opened up the system

BlackMage 02-09-2009 06:12 PM

mine were a bitch to push back in, and i had to twist them as i was compressing them

vanquish 02-10-2009 08:12 AM

It helps to have the correct tool to compress the pistons back into the caliper.

Yes, and that tool would be one that spins the piston clockwise AS its pushing it in. You just cant jam it straight in without damaging the caliper.

massred98gt 02-10-2009 09:48 AM

ya the only way to do it is to buy or make the tool to screw the piston back in. The rear are not the same as the front because the front you can just jam back in. go to autozone and pick the tool up for like 10 bucks. its alittle cube shaped thing that has two stud things (dont know what else to call them lol) sticking out on one side of the cube to stick into the holes in the piston. easy stuff just need the write tools.

massred98gt 02-10-2009 09:49 AM

and ya the only way to pry the pads apart is to bleed ur whole system.

1999 GT 02-10-2009 11:08 AM

yea, im gonna go buy the tool. i got the pads off, so all i need to do is push the piston back in with the tool.

dennis_112 02-10-2009 11:11 AM

The best thing to do is go to autozone and rent a caliper removal tool, it has everything you need.

1999 GT 02-10-2009 11:21 AM

but do i really need all that? all i have to do is push the piston back in, pop the pads back on and bolt the caliper back up

Thats the point of the tool, to push the piston back in. Its the same as doin a rear brake job. You have to get it twisted and pushed and the same time. Doesnt matter if its 1/4" or 2", you still have to push it in the same way.. And those little cubes SUCK

dennis_112 02-10-2009 11:59 AM

+1 to the cubes sucking, the caliper removal tool form Autozone is a beter kit, and all you have to do is rent it for the time you need it, then take it back.

1999 GT 02-10-2009 01:39 PM

how much is it to rent

dennis_112 02-10-2009 02:07 PM

like $30

1999 GT 02-10-2009 02:14 PM

ok, thanks

massred98gt 02-10-2009 02:20 PM

why rent the caliper removal kit when u can get the cube thing for alot cheaper and u will never have to worry about not having the right tool again. whatever just me, everybody has their own style of getting stuff done.

i kinda agree, if the cube gets the job done, then thats what im gonna get. i cant really afford to waste an extra 20 bucks. i'm tight on cash right now...

jrherald420 02-10-2009 04:04 PM

because after you bust the sh*t out of your nuckels youll be wishing you got the other one....i thought "ill just buy the cube thing and save my money" that before i lost the skin on one hand and then threw the p.o.s. cube in the woods!!!

1999 GT 02-10-2009 04:31 PM

lol on second thoughts, you convinced me....how the hell does that cube even work..how do you use the stupid thing lol? im lookin at a pic of it and i cant picture how you use the fn thing

rmodel65 02-10-2009 05:21 PM

the cube has raised points different distances apart for the different calipers, then you put a socket and extension through the center hole and twist till the calipers is seated home

dennis_112 02-10-2009 05:31 PM

Its universal, but not so universal, at least for a mustang...It doesnt fit in the grooves on the caliber very well. It works by attaching to you 3/8 or 1/4 wrench and you use it somewhat like a socket, but it really isnt worth the cheap metal its made out of, I have been through exactly what you going through. I had the car jacked up and realized I need the tool, so I went to advanced auto and ask for a caliber removal tool, they hand me the universal cube thing, I drive back home try it, and it doesnt fit right, so I take it back and ask for a Caliber Removal Tool, he says thats all we have, so I went to Autozone, and asked for the samething, Finally, I found one of the smarter ones that work at a parts store, he said you will need to rent this when you get gone bring it back, and you will get your money back. And it worked 100% better then that cube thing we all hate. The kit has everything you would need and guess what no busted knuckles.

1999 GT 02-10-2009 06:33 PM

ok, i didnt know you get your money back when you're done with it lol, but i'm just gonna do that and rent the tool so i can get the caliper back on lol.

jrherald420 02-10-2009 07:21 PM

If you ever have to do your brakes more than one time the kit is a very good investment!!! or if you do your friends brakes too(like me)

1999 GT 02-10-2009 07:28 PM

true, how much is it to buy the kit?

jrherald420 02-10-2009 07:32 PM

a good kit is between 40.00-70.00 but they are built to last.... heres summits HERE

jrherald420 02-10-2009 07:34 PM

and another one HERE

5.0 85 GT 02-10-2009 08:28 PM

u should stick ur johnson in there and try and get it up to try and expand it....if not have a good one...

dennis_112 02-10-2009 08:38 PM

Jr, the second link is almost exactly like Autozone's rental, and 1999, most of the time when you rent something you get your money back, lol. Kinda the point of RENTING...lol! Thanks for the laugh.

1999 GT 02-10-2009 08:40 PM

when you rent a car you dont get your money back lol...just the way i thought of it

BlackMage 02-10-2009 09:04 PM

i think if you wanted quality, i would go with OTC, what do you guys think?

stangalator 02-10-2009 10:08 PM

i did my rear brakes back in june, i can't quite remember how i did them, but i do remember a large c-clamp and a semi large slotted screw driver that i put in sideways and turned it as i pushed it in with the c-clamp. no need for expensive tools, you have everything you need, unless you can't remove the pads, then idk

like i stated above if you will ever do your or anybody elses brakes its worth the cash to just buy your own...as for renting tools anytime i rented ANYTHING from autozone the tool was bent/broken or missing parts and they would try to charge me for it AND i was ALWAYS charge at least 5 dollars to "RENT" there free tools..... trust me nothings free...just buy it and you will have it anytime you will ever need it.
