AC compressor rattling but blows cold...bad clutch?
Hey guys,
My AC compressor rattles like crazy at times, esp when it's off. When it's off I can see the clutch turning a little bit, although I think it should not be. It's like it's catching and dragging the clutch when it should be idling. And it rattles a lot at times and I can see it grabbing b/c the tensioner is moving a bit too (I just changed it, so it's not the problem).
AC works fine, and the compressor quiets down when it's on.
Seems like I need a new clutch assembly, right?
Looks like a PITA to replace...need pullers, holders, installation tools, etc.
instructions here: http://www.paladinmicro.com/document...Compressor.pdf
Do you think I have to pull the coil and everything or just the hub/plate assembly?
Anybody done this job recently? I'm thinking about just taking it to the shop, maybe. I hardly ever "sell out" like that, but I'm busy and I don't feel like renting 1/2 dozen different tools...although Autozone probably has them all.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks for the hlep...

see if your clutch is loose on your ac pulley. When the cars off, find the ac pulley, and in the middle of the pulley you will see three holes (at least on the 99 I had), and in those three holes, you will see a peg stick out of each one. if those pegs are "loose" then your clutch is bad. My ac worked fine with a bad clutch, it just locked up when the ac was off and make sparks, haha.
*edit*
I think it was going to cost me the same as putting a new ac compressor in. So I ended up just buying an a/c delete pulley and going that route.

See if the round disc between the 3 holes and the compressor is movable. I had that problem, took it to a AC shop and had it fixed for 130 I think it was the clutch but it was a year back
