Default Knocking sound

Every time I step on or let off the gas now I get a clunk. I know something is loose down there so I found this brace by the differential just under the drive shaft that is loose enough that I can jiggle it with my hands and am guessing it is the problem.

Unless this is supposed to be like this...I am not sure. I would tighten it, but If it is actually right under the drive shaft, I don't want to tighten it into it.

I'm gonna go back out and take another look since the car is still on the jack.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions, I sitll need to look at the tranny mountings and a few other things.

Thats not a brace, its just there to absorb vibration.

Check to see if your transmission mount broke. Also look to see if your Drive shaft is bolted tight to the pinion. Do your mufflers swing at all when you take off; they could be hitting the DS? Also, check your engine mount.

edit: just noticed you already said you're checking the Trans mount.

i would also check your ujoints, they seldom go bad on anything anymore unless it's real old...but it's possible

with the car in park (or in gear with ebrake on), grab your driveshaft and try to rotate it either direction. if it clunks, start with u joints (should not move at all)

Thanks guys, don't matter now. Damned clutch went out yesterday, so in 15 minutes I get to take it to pep boys(NOOOO!). Gonna have to start it in 2nd and turn it off at every stop lol. Only reason why I am gonna bother to take it there is because they can have it done today and I gotta work tomorrow.

I hate pep boys too. Every time I go there, somethin goes wrong. First time was distributer on my first Sentra. They call me and tell me my car was done and to come pick it up. I drive over there and half my engine is still taken apart. So i'm like, "Am I supposed to flintstone it home?"

Next time I was in a hurry with my Focus. Needed an oil change because I was about to make a 500 mile trip. Next time I did an oil change I busted a socket trying to take the oil plug off.

The last time was the clutch on my Focus. I got it back with a bad starter and them telling me it would cost 190 to replace it. I tell the guy"What would you think? The starter is hooked to the flywheel and the flywheel is involved in a clutch replacement. And then all of a sudden your starter is broken after a clutch install when it never had any sort of a problem before?"
They tried to tell me that the starter breaks when the clutch is replaced...then how the hell do they ever get a working starter in the car???
Needless to say they replaced it without charging me.

I'll let you know what happens this time. Maybe it will turn into a Geo Metro or somethin
