2002 GT Front Brake Calipar Question
Hello, my name is stano. My daughter has a 2002 Mustang GT with a manual transmission. I, myself, mostly work on Chevrolets but my daughter likes Mustangs. I'm not very knowledgable about Mustangs. And we may have some very simple questions. Thank you.
As I mentioned she has a 2002 Mustang GT with the manual transmission and the car has 48,000 miles on it. It also appears to have had the tires replaced at least once. Other than that we think that the car has not been molested.
The car has been sitting for a couple of months while she was away doing an internship and last weekend we looked it over and found that the left front wheel has a lot of drag. Also, the right front wheel has minimal drag. We have investigated the right front wheel by trying to pull the calipers open with a pry bar and stepping on the brake on a couple of times. This did not free it up. We then sprayed WD-40 behind the rubber on each of the two pistons and with a c-clamp pushed the two pistons inward and using the brake pedal to push the brake pistons outward. We repeated this many times along with a few more shots of WD-40. One of the two pistons seems to have stayed stuck and will not free up enough to allow the brakes to come off.
We are thinking that at 48,000 miles this would be a rare problem or is a common problem?
We called a local Ford dealer and he has never even sold a set of calipers for a 2002 Mustang GT and didn't even have any in stock.
O'Reillys parts store and Advance Parts have rebuilt calipers for around $45.00 and $25.00/45.00 core. If we did this we would probably keep our existing brake calipers for originality.
I guess our question is, is this a common problem or a rare problem? Our second question is, would the fix be to just go with the after market rebuilds or is there a kit available to build our own calipers? Any opinions would be helpful.
Thank you

Piston can sometime be stuck inside and it locks or seizes up. Stock calipers are pretty cheap to replace. Buy a set of those turn the rotors if they're turnable and buy a set of nice pads. Should be all good to go..
