Default Idling...?

My 2000 GT is making a weird rattling at idle. Its not very noticeable when I am sitting there idling, but the longer I idle there, it starts to get louder. The car is fully warmed up, and it sounds like it is coming from in front of the transmission maybe. Keep in mind that it is a rattling sound, not ticking, not knocking, and if I rev it even slightly the noise ceases completely.

I would say it sounds like the TOB. Does the noise go away because the engine overpowers the rattling sound?

Would that noise go away with the clutch depressed?

it is to my knowledge that if you have a squeaky/bad throw out bearing then depressing the clutch pedal will stop the noise; or at least until you release the clutch pedal.

Yes if it was the TOB, then pressing the clutch pedal in would make the sound go away until you let off it again. TOB makes noise cause the cable is to tight so pressing it in would take the load off of it hence why the noise would go away.

Well, I just tried it today, pushing down the clutch, and it did not stop!

You have to understand that this noise is not a tick, or a knock, it's like a rattle that is intermittent. If any of you are familiar with the ticking that goes on in the transmission at idle, this new found noise goes at about the same pace as that ticking. It's annoying, and is definitely not apparent when the car is cold. I can REALLY hear it when I am next to a brick wall or something, and the sound comes back at me

sounds like you might possibly have a bad catalytic converter or maybe one of the heat shields is coming loose.

Yeah, it's weird. For some reason today, the car was hot as ever, and it wasn't making this rattling at all! Time for some X pipes!! I think it might be the cat that comes down from the headers that might be bad. I need to look under the car over thanksgiving break. Any more ideas?

yeah, thats what im thinking. i had a heat shield come loose on one of my precats on my 94 that liked to rattle around.

have you listened to it from under the car? maybe you'll be able to locate it better.
