Gears help
Hey guys I know many responses will be use the search function which i did..i just figured this would a little quicker and maybe someone wouldnt mind giving a little insight. I just picked up a 2000 GT and I dont race just daily driver around town and occasionally a 2-3 hour trip. Do gears give u better gas mileage? I know on my truck they did when i got my 37"s on but im not sure about the car. Also its a manual so what would be a good ratio to go with? What will the difference be? Thanks guys sry for the NEWB question

Are you saying that he should get 3.73's and if he does, he wont see much? I dont get it.
If thats the case, my 3.73's just got installed today and i am picking up my car tomorrow. It's supposed to rain, but ill let you know how i like them when i can find a dry patch to let her rip.
Everyone on this forum says 4.10's, but it's up to you to decide.
People go from the stock 3.27's to 4.10's and say WOW this is awesome.
People go from 3.27's to 3.73's and say its awesome. Maybe just without the WOW that you would have said with 4.10's
People get 3.73's and wish they got 4.10's (this is a significant amount of the mustang population)
People get 4.10's but have too much power and have a tough time hooking 1st and 2nd so they go down to 3.73's (this is less than 10% of the mustang population)
I forget how the gear ratios are for autos and manuals. but a manual with 3.73's has better ratios than an auto with 4.10's... That's going to confuse us all unless somebody knows what i am talking about haha.. So in my theory, a manual with 3.73's is equivalent or slightly greater than the feel of an auto with 4.10's.
EDIT: To answer your question, you MIGHT get better gas mileage simply bc the engine doesnt have to work as hard to get the car going as fast with a higher numerical gear ratio... People report better gas mileage in the city, but worse on the highway due to increased RPM's. Usually, gas mileage goes down simply bc you cant stop your foot from going down to the floor With either 3.73's or 4.10's, 5th gear will be useful and daily driving "joy" will increase... If you cannot decide between what gear ratio, there is always 3.90's. If you drive long distances, 3.73's will keep your RPM's down when compared to 4.10's. Here is cliffyk's gear calculator

If you are racing, with the same exact car, a 4.10 car will usually always beat a 3.73 car in a straight line

I feel like 3.73's would be best for street performance. I have some pretty short gears on my ***. And I promise...being in third gear before you get through an intersection sometimes get's annoying. My worthless .02! =)

This is what i was referring to about the tranny ratios..
t45 manual transmission with 3.73's
1: 3.38 (12.61)
2: 2.00 (7.46)
3: 1.32 (4.92)
4: 1.00 (3.73)
5: 0.67 (2.50)
Automatic tranny with 4.10's
1: 2.84 (11.64)
2: 1.55 (6.35)
3: 1.00 (4.10)
4: 0.70 (2.87)
So as you can see, this is why i say that a manual with 3.73's should have the same feel, if not greater, than an auto with 4.10's. Bc all the auto guys say "4.10's are awesome!"
So with my theory, a manual with 3.73 is the same as a 4.10 auto. And all the people with 4.10's in their manuals just plan on shredding sh*t up.

is your car an auto or a manual?
and your mpgs will go down if you get 3.73...and they will go down if you get 4.10
but nothing noticeable, you will just be reving slightly higher while in the car, highway is pretty much the only time i notice it with my 4.10s..
and btw, anyone who says 4.10s are too much has never driven with 4.10s...but a 3.73 is a great gear ratio as well
